Brooke McKean is President/COO of Chicago Scholars. She oversees the day-to-day management of Chicago Scholars. Brooke believes in service-oriented and values-based leadership to ensure that Chicago Scholars embodies the values that define its programs to “be the change.” If you want to learn more about Chicago Scholars strategy implementation and operations, Brooke is the person to reach out to.
Prior to joining Chicago Scholars, Brooke was COO for Heartland Alliance International in Chicago for seven years during a time when the organization tripled in size. Throughout her career, Brooke has supported programming focused on youth. Prior to working in Chicago, Brooke supported child protection programs in Haiti in response the earthquake in 2010. She also worked in Senegal as an instructor in participatory community development with a study abroad program with the University of Amherst. She is fluent in French and intermediate Haitian Creole and holds a BA in International Studies and Economics from the University of Washington and an MSc in Development Management from the London School of Economics.
Throughout her life, Brooke has been driven to respond to injustice and inequities. She believes that supporting youth with access to education and leadership programming will give them the tools they need to achieve their goals.
Brooke’s advice to scholars is to figure out inspires and drives you. We accomplish the most when we do what we love. Learn who you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are so that you can continue to grow and learn every day.
Outside of work, Brooke loves spending time with her family hiking, going to parks, and traveling. Brooke is a photographer, avid reader, and nature lover.
