Emerge Fellowship: Week One at Heidrick & Struggles

By Amanda McIntyre & Jawon Griffin

The first week at Heidrick & Struggles was astonishing, to say the least. Meeting a myriad of amazing people was life-changing, to say the least, and in just 4 short days we both have learned so much. We were so excited to meet everyone in the office and learn what everyone does, and how it contributes to the overall company. The most exciting part of our job is the phenomenal view we have of the city from the office. Our internship is located on the 49th floor of Willis Tower and we have the best view.

Orientation was very insightful and we added more skills to our arsenal. One of the most helpful tools we learned is the RACI model. We had the opportunity to join a few conference calls and as people began to speak it became very clear what roles and responsibilities they were designated. Another skill we learned during orientation was how to not use filler words in public speaking. Some of the executives at our internship joke about the filler words they use and the ones they hear the most from others. They, of course, reminded us to avoid using them at all costs, as they make people appear as they lack sophistication and confidence. Hearing others repeatedly use filler words served as a further example of the importance of eliminating them from conversations and presentations.

Although we are enjoying our time here at Heidrick, we are very excited to meet back up with our cohort. Though orientation was only 5 days, we have truly built strong bonds with our teams and want to hear all about the experiences they have had at their respective internships. We also are excited to do more work on our group projects, as we have discovered new skills here that will be very useful as we continue working as a team.

Week 1 was amazing and we are excited to continue this journey!
