I remember like it was just yesterday that I walked across the stage at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy Convocation to receive my diploma. At that moment, my most phenomenal challenges and achievements rushed to the forefront of my mind. "How did I get here?" Being a first-generation student from the South Side of Chicago, where "the struggle" could have been the theme of the neighborhood, I knew little about college - and then I came across Chicago Scholars.

Never would I have predicted the impact that this family would have on my life. Chicago Scholars has been a force since my senior year of high school. Their guidance, workshop intensives and mentorship readied me to apply and interview one-on-one with nine of the best match fit colleges of my choice. Chicago Scholars was always there for me throughout college from dealing with money management and supporting me during a family loss, to providing peer mentors and wonderful internship opportunities. They gave me the confidence to embrace who I am, leveraged my opportunities, reinforced that there is no such thing as "can't" and let me forge my own path. Chicago Scholars gave me the courage to dream, and the resources necessary to achieve even the wildest of dreams – college graduation.

So as I glanced over at my family on my college graduation day, I took a deep breath just before they called my name and recalled what really got me to where I was – faith, my family, and Chicago Scholars - for believing in who I am and whom I am becoming.

Diamond is well on her way to career success. She accepted an offer with GCM Grosvenor as a Human Resource Analyst directly after graduation.
