Chicago Scholars Virtual: Chicago Scholars, your way

After 30 years as Chicago’s premier college and career access program, we know what works for students. We also know that our Chicago Scholars Classic programming can’t meet the needs of every Chicago student. This year, we’re introducing Chicago Scholars Virtual (CSV), a fully-virtual, asynchronous version of our proven curriculum for 375 additional Scholars in our Class of 2031.

This means that we will accept 375 CSV Scholars and between 500-600 Chicago Scholars Classic Scholars into the Class of 2031.

FAQ

What is Chicago Scholars Virtual?

Chicago Scholars Virtual is a fully remote, asynchronous version of our proven Chicago Scholars Classic curriculum hosted in our web app, REACH. CSV Scholars are members of the Chicago Scholars Class of 2031 and will become Chicago Scholars Alumni when they graduate from college.

How is CSV different from the in-person program?

CSV Scholars receive all of the same content as Scholars in our in-person program. However, CSV students have access to a limited number of in-person opportunities.

CSV students WILL NOT:

  • Attend the Onsite College and Leadership Forum
  • Attend the in-person New Scholar Orientation (a virtual version will be available in REACH)
  • Attend in-person workshops, Writing Labs, or Interview Labs
  • Be assigned to a cohort or mentor
What can CSV Scholars access?

The CSV program gives Scholars access to much of the Chicago Scholars Classic experience in a fully-virtual format.

CSV Scholars can:

  • Access the full Chicago Scholars curriculum in a specialized quest in REACH
  • Attend our in-person College Fair
  • Take advantage of all of our College Partner benefits
  • Access Education and Leadership Development grants and emergency funding in college.
  • Attend virtual scholarship, college, and internship info sessions
  • Access the Chicago Scholars-administered scholarships and internships board in REACH
  • Complete the Chicago Scholars program at their own pace, anywhere they want
What are the requirements to participate in CSV?

CSV has the same eligibility requirements as the Chicago Scholars Classic program.

Eligible applicants:

  • Live and attend school within the Chicago city limits
  • Are juniors in high school
  • Have a 3.0 GPA or higher (if your GPA is lower, please still apply — there’s room for you to add details about your academic journey)
  • Want to attend a four-year college

CSV applicants complete the same application as CSC Scholars. There is no need to indicate your preference for CSV or in-person programming at this point.

If you are selected for an interview, you will be asked to rank your preference for CSV or in-person programming, but please note that we cannot guarantee placement in your preferred version of the program.

How do I apply to CSV?

CSV Scholars go through the same application process as in-person participants. The process looks like this:

  1. Fill out the Chicago Scholars application here
  2. If selected for an interview, you’ll get an email asking you to choose an interview time and indicate your preference for Chicago Scholars Classic or CSV
  3. Participate in an interview about why you’re interested in the program and your education and career goals
    1. Please note that both in-person and virtual interviews are available
  4. Successful applicants will be notified in May
Will CSV Scholars attend Onsite?

No, we do not have capacity to accommodate CSV students at Onsite. However, CSV participants will still have access to virtual college and career info sessions and will benefit from all of our College Partners’ commitments to Scholars.

Will CSV Scholars have cohorts/mentors?

No, CSV students will not have mentors or be assigned to cohorts. CSV is designed to be completed at your own pace and on your own time.

Who should participate in CSV?

CSV is best suited for Scholars who would prefer to complete their college and career learning remotely and at their own pace.

A few other considerations:

  • CSV is only appropriate for Scholars who have reliable access to the internet and a device that can access the internet
  • Scholars who have transportation concerns or don’t think they can regularly attend programming in the Loop should consider CSV
What is REACH?

REACH is a web app owned by Chicago Scholars. Through REACH, people all over the world can access college, career, and leadership resources through quests personalized to them and their needs.

CSV is an exclusive quest within REACH that will only be available to students who are accepted into our program. Please note that while REACH is based on Chicago Scholars’ curriculum, only CSV has access to the full curriculum in REACH. CSV also provides additional opportunities like an invitation to the College Fair and access to exclusive scholarships.
